Listen to Her

Believe her
when her voice shakes,
when the words come slowly,
when she has told the story so many times
she no longer knows where the beginning ends.

Listen to her.

Not to the dress she wore,
not to the hour she walked home,
not to the glass she held,
or the messages she answered,
or the ones she didn’t.

It is not about what she was wearing.
It is not about where she went.
It is not about how much she drank,
how friendly she seemed,
how loudly she laughed,
or whether she said yes to something
before she said no to something else.

A woman does not become less worthy
of being heard
because she trusted someone.

And fear does not always look like screaming.
Sometimes it is silence.
Sometimes it is going still.
Sometimes it is going home,
locking the door,
and sitting on the bathroom floor
trying to understand what just happened.

So stop asking,
Why didn’t she leave?

Ask instead,
Why did he think he had the right to stay?

Stop asking,
Why didn’t she fight?

Ask,
Why was she put in a position
where she had to fight at all?

Her clothes are not an invitation.
Her kindness is not consent.
Her silence is not consent.
Her fear is not consent.
And changing her mind
does not make her cruel, difficult,
or responsible for what happens next.

Listen to her.

She is not asking for a perfect world.
She is asking for something much simpler.

To be believed.
To be heard.
To be safe.

And perhaps, one day,
when a woman tells us what happened,
we will stop looking for reasons
to doubt her
and start looking for ways
to stand beside her.

Because the question was never
What was she wearing?

The question is,

Why didn’t we listen?

Threads of Her Name

They told us
history was stone.

Cold.
Fixed.
Carved by careful hands.

But history was never stone.

It was breath held behind closed teeth.
Ink smudged by tired fingers.
A name hidden in the margin
because the page belonged to someone else.

It was women
writing themselves sideways into the record.

A spiral in the corner of a notebook.
A recipe that was really a warning.
A hymn carrying directions to safety.
A thread stitched red through grey cloth.
A footnote refusing to disappear.

They called us emotional
when we remembered too much.

Hysterical
when we noticed the pattern.

Difficult
when we refused to forget ourselves.

Still, we kept recording.

On scraps of paper.
On skin.
On kitchen walls.
In archives that smelled of dust and rain.
In the trembling space between speaking
and being silenced.

Because memory is not passive.

It is resistance.

And every woman who said
No, that is not what happened,
left a door cracked open for the next one.

The next reader.
The next witness.
The next voice brave enough to write her own name
before someone else erased it.

Listen carefully.

You can still hear them.

In libraries.
In classrooms.
In code.
In songs.
In the hush before a woman finally decides
she will not make herself smaller anymore.

The archive does not sleep.

It waits.

And somewhere, even now,
another hand is drawing the spiral
in the margin.

From a book I’m writing and will be out in the Autumn.
