Rise in Right-Wing Politics Sparks Concerns Over Human Rights and Social Division

By Julie Hodgson, Freelance Journalist.

As right-wing political movements continue to gain momentum across parts of the Western world, human rights experts and civil society groups are sounding the alarm over a growing culture of fear, division, and institutional cruelty. Critics argue that while the language of law and order may appeal to some voters, the long-term consequences of these ideologies are dangerous for both democracy and the social wellbeing of all citizens.

One of the starkest examples comes from the United States, where agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have become symbols of heavy-handed enforcement under right-wing administrations. Reports of mass detentions, family separations, and the criminalisation of asylum seekers have raised international concern. “When political leaders promote fear of the ‘other,’ institutions like ICE are not just upholding the law—they’re enforcing an ideology that sees some lives as less valuable than others,” said a spokesperson from the Human Rights Coalition.

But the impact of this political shift doesn’t stop at the institutional level. Experts warn that the growing normalisation of divisive rhetoric and punitive policies encourages everyday bullying and hate. “We’ve seen a sharp rise in racially motivated attacks, anti-LGBTQ+ incidents, and general intolerance in schools and public spaces,” said community advocate Carla Reyes. “When leaders model cruelty and exclusion, it gives permission for others to follow suit.” As democratic values such as inclusion, justice, and compassion come under strain, many are urging citizens to remain vigilant, speak out, and stand up for the vulnerable—before the damage becomes irreversible.

The Blame Game: How Dictators Deflect Responsibility and Target Minorities

In times of political and economic crisis, in which the USA is seeing a rise of hate and racism, history has shown a familiar pattern: authoritarian leaders refuse to take responsibility for their failures and instead shift the blame onto vulnerable groups. From the rise of fascism in the 20th century to modern-day autocracies, dictators have repeatedly used minorities as scapegoats, fuelling division and fear to maintain their grip on power. While we are all fighting with each other, they are busy doing their thing. Distraction is the key.

The Dictator’s Playbook: Shifting Blame

Dictators thrive on control, and when things go wrong—whether it’s economic downturns, political unrest, or military failures—they rarely admit fault. Instead, they create enemies. These enemies are often minority groups, marginalised communities, or social movements that challenge the status quo. By pointing fingers elsewhere, authoritarian leaders distract the public from their own incompetence and corruption.

A classic example is Nazi Germany, where Adolf Hitler blamed Jewish people for economic struggles and political instability, leading to catastrophic consequences. Similarly, in Stalinist Russia, Joseph Stalin purged ethnic groups, intellectuals, and political dissidents, branding them as “enemies of the state” to consolidate his own power. And now the USA has the petulant orange man who won’t take any criticism whatsoever, and you are fired on the spot if you are not a “yes” man.

Weaponizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Rhetoric

In modern politics, movements that promote social justice—such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)have become convenient targets for authoritarian-minded leaders. Instead of addressing systemic inequalities, some politicians claim that DEI initiatives are to blame for economic problems, social divisions, or even declining national identity. By framing DEI as a threat rather than a means of creating fairer societies, autocrats can rally support from those who feel left behind or threatened by change. Can you see the pattern here?

For example, in Hungary, Viktor Orbán has openly attacked multiculturalism and LGBTQ+ rights, portraying them as dangerous Western ideologies undermining traditional values. Similarly, in the U.S., figures with authoritarian tendencies have targeted DEI efforts in education, business, and government, falsely suggesting that inclusion initiatives cause division rather than addressing pre-existing inequalities.

Why Dictators Target Minorities

  1. A Convenient Distraction – Blaming minorities for a nation’s problems diverts attention from government failures, corruption, or mismanagement.
  2. Creating an “Us vs. Them” Mentality – Dictators rely on fear to unite their base, convincing the majority that an “enemy” is responsible for societal decline.
  3. Destroying Opposition – Targeting activists, journalists, or minority leaders weakens resistance and silences dissenting voices.
  4. Maintaining Power – By controlling the narrative, dictators ensure loyalty and prevent citizens from questioning their rule. Look at North Korea, the population is terrified of uttering anything to anyone, for fear of prison or worse!

The Danger of Scapegoating

History warns us that once a leader begins blaming minority groups for national struggles, democracy is at risk. From the persecution of Jewish communities in the 1930s to modern anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, authoritarian regimes use division as a weapon. Today, when DEI efforts are framed as societal threats rather than progress, it serves as a red flag for growing authoritarianism. Blaming a group for just “being there” so they can commit genocide without any consequences!

Nigel Farage has long relied on anti-immigrant rhetoric to stoke fear and division, blaming migrants for issues that have little to do with them. Whether it’s the struggling NHS, housing shortages, or crime rates, Farage repeatedly points the finger at immigration rather than addressing deeper systemic problems like underfunding, government mismanagement, and economic inequality. His claims often lack evidence but serve a political purpose—distracting from real policy failures while inflaming public resentment. By portraying migrants as the root of the UK’s challenges, Farage perpetuates a misleading narrative that ignores the contributions immigrants make to society and diverts attention from those truly responsible for the nation’s problems.

Resisting the Blame Game

To counter this tactic, societies must:

  • Educate Against Misinformation – Understanding historical patterns of scapegoating helps prevent their repetition. This is a vital tactic.
  • Defend DEI and Human Rights – Advocating for fairness and inclusion is essential in resisting divisive rhetoric.
  • Hold Leaders Accountable – Governments must be scrutinised for their policies and failures rather than accepting convenient scapegoats. Money should not be why a political party is in power forever!

A dictator will always find someone to blame, but history has shown that societies that resist fear-mongering and advocate inclusion endure.

The Decline of Real Journalism: Why We Can No Longer Trust Our Sources

Been thinking a lot about this subject, what with reading so much garbage on the internet! I really feel we need to switch the internet off for a year or so , let everyone get back to old school basics.

Journalism once hailed as the “fourth estate,” has traditionally served as the cornerstone of an informed society. Its role was to report facts, investigate truths, and hold power to account, ensuring that the public could trust the information they consumed. However, in recent years, we’ve seen a troubling decline in the standards of real journalism, and the effects of this erosion are far-reaching. Today, it has become harder than ever to trust the news, and the implications are deeply concerning. I never read online news anymore!

Clickbait
One of the most significant shifts contributing to the decline of journalism is the rise of clickbait culture. Traditional media outlets ( You know who you are) have faced increasing pressure to compete with online platforms, where sensational headlines and flashy content often garner more attention than in-depth reporting. As a result, some news outlets have resorted to prioritising entertainment value over accuracy.

Instead of rigorous, fact-checked journalism, we are often served articles designed to elicit emotional responses—fear, outrage, or excitement—all in the name of clicks. This sensationalism sacrifices nuance for virality and distorts the public’s understanding of critical issues. In a world where “clicks” translate to advertising dollars, the pursuit of truth has taken a back seat to profits.

Misinformation and Disinformation
While clickbait may seem relatively harmless, it paves the way for a more insidious problem: the spread of misinformation and disinformation. Misinformation refers to false or misleading information spread without malicious intent, while disinformation is deliberately deceptive. Both have become pervasive in today’s media landscape.

From conspiracy theories gaining traction to false narratives shaping political opinions, the lack of reliable journalism makes it difficult for readers to discern what is true and what isn’t. Social media platforms have only exacerbated the issue, providing a breeding ground for unverified stories to spread at lightning speed, further diluting the credibility of real journalism.

The sad Loss of Investigative Reporting
Investigative journalism, the heart of holding powerful institutions accountable, has also suffered. Investigative reporters once had the resources and time to dig deep into stories, exposing corruption, abuse, and injustice. However, investigative reporting is in decline due to budget cuts and the economic collapse of many traditional newsrooms.

When major newsrooms are downsized, fewer resources are available for long-term investigations that often take months or even years. Instead, the focus shifts to producing quick, easily consumable content that requires less time and money to produce. As a result, the watchdog function of journalism—the very thing that protects democracy—is weakened.

Media Consolidation and Bias
Another factor contributing to the decline of journalism is the consolidation of media ownership. A handful of corporations now control much of what we read, watch, and hear, reducing diversity of thought and perspective in the media. This concentration of ownership often leads to a lack of critical reporting on certain topics that may conflict with corporate interests.

In tandem with media consolidation, political polarisation has further undermined trust in journalism. Many news outlets have become aligned with specific ideological viewpoints, catering to their audience’s biases rather than striving for balanced, objective reporting. This bias creates echo chambers where people only consume information that confirms their preconceived beliefs, further eroding the role of journalism as a fair and impartial arbiter of truth. I don’t think we can stop this; it’s like a Tsunami of fake spiralling us forward into a future of “Not news” and “unworthy reading”. We will never know what truth is or is not.

I, for one, and so tired of this…. YOU?

Harry and Meghan

I have been watching the documentary and have found it so sad what they have gone through. I can see Harry lovingly protecting Meghan, as Charles should have done with Diana. I think he sees what others in the Royal family do not. I have always loved the Queen; she has been our Queen my whole life. Harry has watched his mum be subjected to what Meghan was. So good for Harry to protect and love. Isn’t that what we all want in life???

I do not hate anyone or wish anyone to be bullied. An absolute fact I have lived by my whole life.

I am appalled at the venom-spitting public spewing out hate giving their “expert” opinion! No one is actually listening to them, they prefer to just be NASTY!

Read this..It’s an eye-opener…

https://www.tyla.com/celebrity/meghan-markle-water-bottle-un-assembly-genevieve-roth-20220720

The media have seemed to have it in for Megan almost from the very beginning! the press pack, “good word for them as wolves hunt in a pack” relentlessly hounding and crossing the lines on when and how to get a picture! remember princess Diana telling the press to leave her boys alone? Seem familiar? A good word to use here is “stalking”

This tweet from Mat Haig says it all…

Meghan is kind, and funny, a wonderful mother and adores Harry, you can see the love and affection from each other. And why not?

I think people should stop regurgitating the spew that the press lies about, never having a source, Journalism is bad, it has gotten worse, fake news and lies can be backed up by a fake website a brainless so-called “expert” or a TV guy who argues with anyone who has a pulse! People speculate for their 15 minutes of fame and throw a hissy fit if questioned!

I have now watched all of the documentary, shocked about how the Institution did not protect its own! and was annoyed at the popularity of them both over William! It’s almost mafia-like. Harry is definitely his mother’s son!

Good morning Britain, hangs on the bandwagon of bullying, twisting words that have been said..It really is sick to see this continuing.

“Eight months of that, I wasn’t even visible. I was on maternity leave with a baby but what was able to be manufactured and churned out ― it’s almost unsurvivable,” she said “… That’s so big you can’t even think of what that feels like. Because I don’t care if you’re 15 or if you’re 25, if people are saying things about you that aren’t true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so damaging.”

I say, if it’s not bothering your cup of tea, then leave well alone. leave THEM alone.

THINK before you speak and be careful what you write about. Research facts first.

This is a message to all the journalists out there… BEHAVE, please! and get back to the principles we all should hold as writers… Keep your boundaries.
